Why Provide Nest Boxes

Many species of bird population have decreased due to loss of habitat. Some examples of habitat loss are clear cutting of forests, use of land for agriculture, and urban sprawl. The use of pesticides, fires, the introduction and spread of non-native species, and harsh winters have also contributed to the loss of species.

If extensive nest box programs are undertaken the population of native birds will increase.

Why do we want more birds? Insect control is a reason. May be we could someday control insects with birds rather than pesticides. Birds are pretty. People like to watch them and bird watching is a good hobby.
